Drama king comes to see his nurse Lilly.
He is holding his head and bent over.
I know him well, I am not overly concerned.
"I am soooo sick, I have a headache, I have to go home"
When you are 7 and school gets hard,
this is how you feel.
Nurse Lilly checks him thoroughly...
No fever, throat and ears look perfect.
No physical signs of illness,
yet I understand,
school can give you a headache.
"I tell you what, you are going home in one hour,
How about I give you a peppermint and an ice bag for
your head. Will that help you?"
".... and a sticker?"
"HMMMM, a sticker? Have you had a good day,
have you moved your bee?"
"Nope, nurse Lilly, haven't moved my bee"
Well, this would be hard for me to believe but
heck, let me give this sweety a sticker and get him
through the hour.
"Here is your sticker, now I am going to walk you back to
class"
He replies, "You are going to walk me all the way back
or just watch me cross the street?"
"No my honey, I am going to walk you all the way
back to your teacher"
He is getting worried,
" Are you going to talk to my teacher?"
Oh, now I get it, he is worried about where that bee might be!
"Why buddy, you want me to ask her about your bee
or you want to keep this between us?"
He smiles that big smile because he knows if Nurse Lil
and him make a deal, it is solid.
"Yeah, nurse Lilly, lets keep it between us"
"You got a deal, you stay at school for one more hour,
and we will keep it between us and You get your sticker."
He forgets his ice, headache is gone....

ReplyDeletebet you there are lots of words in the story that can be tranlated... bet if I knew an old french speaking person who didnt' have dementia they could tell the same story again in cajun frenc, I bet ya!

She said if you can't find the word just change it to something else.
I think what she was saying is another word can do the job or
like make it up, sticker could be sticka" and french people would get it.
You see it isn't dead, we could change it...

ReplyDeleteIts only dead for people that don't know how to speak it, its still alive for me , because i'm one that was fortunate to learn it.
ReplyDeleteI compare it to Latin ... And you are all missing the point here .... eventually you add enough words and you speak English. The dialect will not be saved. Sorry guys, times have changed. Unless someone sits down and start making up words for the 21 st century. It's a natural progression. The story can be easily translated but there's no word for "sticker" ... and T-Gateaux is "little cake" ... no word for "drama" ... Have you ever met two computer programer's speaking the Cajun french dialect while installing microsoft? Talk about a bunch of "chauses" being pointed to. Now go across the Atlantic and you'll see the French vocabulary expanding because it is still a viable language. My point is there's not enough use to save it.

ReplyDeleteMy point is nothing learned is a waste, sure there are words you can't translate, but if someone wants to learn cajun french it is not a waste. ME and john Duet spoke french many times offshore.People do still speak it with others.I'm not missing no points I think its great that people want to learn anything. I had people tell me at work why do you want to learn this, its not part of your job. But If you like learning a craft or a language I don't see no waste. I would love to live till 100 years old, so as long as I'm alive its not a dead language in my book of life. And that is the point that point that counts in my world.
ReplyDeleteIts just like country music and rock and roll. I hate country and love Rock and Roll. We all have things In life we think is important to us and one thing I will defend is my cajun heritage. And as far as it dying, it suer will in about 50 years after my age group die, because when I went to school we did have conversational french classes and many people were in these classes and they are still alive today and Bobby gisclair aint the only parent taht didn't teach there kids french, so for some it will not die for another 100 years.
ReplyDeleteLearning Cajun French will not earn my kids one red cent. You can hold onto but it won't last. You spend half a year or better in Alaska and you speak it with no one. That's not enough. You and everyone else would have to be speaking it constantly to save it. Each day, month, year, words and vocabulary will be lost. Not your fault. Not my fault. Really no one's fault. Our people were a small group that got the boot and landed here but we're not enough to keeping it going. About all me and Rod can talk about is a pat-tassa or a canard gris or a do-gris which is about it... we can't (nor will Lil) conjugate verbs or make sentences. Unless your work keeps you home everynight where you can speak it to them constantly. I had it spoken to me constantly. I listened to hours upon hours of conversations. And you know what I learned? Most people today that speak it, lose more and more of it each day. BUCK? You and I both know you need more of a reference than Buck... Today he's got more english into it than anything else... Why not teach broken English? That would work better. Learn Spanish .... make more $$$ speaking Spanish or Chinese.
ReplyDeleteLittle do you know about Alaska , there are alot of people here from Louisiana that are cajuns on the Liberty Drilling rig and there are some from Beau Bridge that speak french, you said the other day nobody taught you french, so how would you know what I will loose in speaking french. I was raised speaking french with a grandma and grandpa that spoke only french and I still remember the words till today and if somebody was here that spoke french I would be able to communicate today. and also I'm nit worried about verbs and all that other stuff or about making money speaking french. I'm just glad that I was able to speak french. We learn history in shools I taught that was a waste of time when I was young, Did it do me any good in my career, hell no, but I as I got older I became very interested in it and Believe it is very interesting learning about the past just like our cajun heritage. You said something the other day that people or the media making fun of our culture, well I will tell you that I'm not ashamed of my cajun heritage and will always defend it. Its like I said the other day the young generations were shamed out the culture, because today people feel like we need to live up to higher standards and speak intellegent, but I am glad to be able to speak like a cajun and I made a dam good living without having to change the way i communicate with others. and as far as Lilly and all speaking french, thats is up to them, I really don't care if they learn it so I really the se the point of discussing this topic anymore. I'm one proud cajun that can't speak proper English and will keep on being proud of the cajun culture even though the young generation and the outsiders think were Dumbasses.
ReplyDeleteYou made a dam good living because of your work ethic ... it had nothing to do with Cajun french or heritage. It had to do with Cajun Ron. You should be worried about verbs because that's what speaking a language is all about. It makes a difference. It changes the meaning of the sentence when you are speaking which brings me back to why it's not going to last. Those that learn it now and plug in words as they go along change the meaning and the language is lost. What I know is very simple .... there aren't enough words being formed for the language for it to continue. And SINCE WHEN ARE YOU NOT WORRIED ABOUT MAKING MONEY ?? We all are worried about that so don't try to pass that on me. I'm not ashamed of my heritage ... Family came from the Spain via Canary Islands as well as from the North Coast of France. I'm not a direct descendant of anyone from Nova Scotia so I'm not Acadian... my people came straight from the motherland. But my people spoke the language. But it's not the same language that is spoken today. And as far as dumbasses go, there's me and you and cj that lead the pack. I love my Cajun Ron even though there's no way in the world he could tell me how to say Macbook in Cajun French. And ask your padna's from Breau Bridge what a "cawan" is.
