MR. RANDOLPH

Too many memories on blogs about this man
not to give him his own space.
So lets do memories of Mr. Randolph
and RANDOLPH'S RESTAURANT
When Mr. R. was dying, I went to visit
and shared this memory with him:
When I was a teenager, my room upstairs faced his
house. Because air conditioning was used only
on the hottest of nights, there were many nights
that I slept with my window opened.
I remember every morning between three and four
Mr. R. walking to the restaurant.
The reason I knew it was him
because every morning he would whistle on his trek.
He didn't care that it was 3:00 am!!!
He was on his way to do what he loved to do
and he was happy.
I shared with him that his whistling
was my sign,
my sign that everything was right in the world,
it would be a good day.
This story made him cry.
He never realized his simple act of happiness
was viewed by another.
I loved this man for all he did for all of us.
Everyday after walking home from school,
I would stop there to give Mom a kiss,
but more so for a pocket full of olives.
He would fuss me but never stopped me.
He always allowed us to go in and out of
the restaurant as if we belonged there.
Where else could Mom have worked that
they would have allowed that?
We owe a lot to this kind man and his family.
HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO ALL THE
DADDIES OUT THERE WHO
I LOVE AND WHO PLAYED A PART
IN RAISING ME!!!

  1. IRONIC THAT I CAME TO VISIT YOUR BLOG AND MR R WAS ON. TWO THINGS I REMEMBER ABOUT THIS MAN AND YOU KNOW I HAVE A LITTLE STORY ABOUT BOTH EVENTS.

FIRST, IF YOU GO TO PETER'S BLOG I WROTE ABOUT ME AND RACHEL. WE WERE VERY GOOD FRIENDS GROWING UP BUT WHEN WE REACHED HIGH SCHOOL WE HAD DIFFERENT CIRCLE OF FRIENDS. BUT RACHEL AND I NEVER STOPPED TALKING OR STOPPED REMEMBERING OUR YOUNGER YEARS. NO MATTER WHAT I WAS DOING OR WHAT SUNDAY AFTERNOON BROUGHT MY WAY I KNEW RACHEL AND I WOULD MEET FOR LUNCH AT RANDOLPH'S EVERY NOON OF EVERY SUNDAY! I WAS VERY YOUNG WHEN THIS STARTED AND WAS OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL WHEN RACHEL WOULD COME DOWN FROM LAFAYETTE WE WOULD MEET FOR LUNCH. EVERYTIME I WOULD WALK INTO THAT KITCHEN MR R WOULD SAY "DO I HAVE TO FEED YOU AGAIN! I'M GOING TO USE YOU AS A DEPENDENT ON MY INCOME TAX FORM THIS YEAR!" IT WAS THE JOKE OF EVERY SUNDAY! IT WAS 10 YEARS IN FEBRUARY THAT RACHEL IS GONE FROM THIS EARTH AND I STILL REMEMBER HER AND OUR FRIENDSHIP AND HOPES SHE REMEMBERS ALSO.

NOW ABOUT MR R!! WELL, WE WERE LIVING AT MOM AND DAD'S AND ONE SATURDAY AFTERNOON, MOM WAS WORKING, DAD, I GUESS, MUST HAVE BEEN FISHING. I WAS GOING TO DO EVERYONE A FAVOR - I WAS GOING TO COOK A ROAST WITH ROAST POTATOES AND RICE FOR SUPPER. I STARTED BY PUTTING OIL IN OUR BLACK POT AND SEASONED THE ROAST AND PUT IT IN TO OIL TO BROWN IT. I COULD SMELL SOMETHING WASN'T RIGHT AND THE BROWNER THE ROAST GOT THE WORST IT SMELLED. I CALLED MOM AND ASKED HER IF THE ROAST WAS STILL GOOD AND SHE SAID DAD HAD JUST BOUGHT IT. I TOLD HER ABOUT THE SMELL AND SHE CAME OVER. WELL INSTEAD OF OIL, I USED HONEY, MOM HAD PUT HONEY WHERE SHE USUALLY KEEPS THE OIL SO I JUST ASSUMED IT WAS OIL. WELL WHEN MOM GOT BACK TO WORK SHE TOLD EVERYONE IN THE KITCHEN. THEN I HEARD A KNOW ON THE DOOR AND IT WAS NONE OTHER THAN MR R. HE CAME TO GET MY INSTRUCTIONS FOR COOKING A HONEY ROAST. HE CAME IN AND I NEVER SAW HIM LAUGH SO HARD IN ALL MY LIFE.

THAT MR R HE SURE WAS A CHARACTER!

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY TO ALL FATHERS!

  2. I KNOW THIS A BLOG ABOUT MR. R BUT I HAVE TO TELL YOU'LL ABOUT MY FATHER'S DAY MORNING. GETTING DRESSED FOR 10:00 MASS I WAS THING ABOUT DAD. I DON'T GO TO THE CEMETARY BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT IS JUST A PLACE FOR HIS ASHES NOW. I THINK ABOUT HIM AND SINCE WE HAVE BEEN BLOGGING I THINK ABOUT HIM EVEN MORE. BUT THIS MORNING I JUST COULDN'T SHAKE MY THOUGHTS OF HIM. NOT THAT I WOULD WANT TO BUT THIS WAS EXCEPTIONLY OVER AND BEYOND! AT 10:00 MASS TODAY, CJ, ME, TIF AND MONE (TEDI WENT TO SERVE MASS) WERE SITTING AND DURING THE OFFERING "ON EAGLES WINGS" STARTED PLAYING. RIGHT AWAY I TOLD TIFFANY THAT WAS THE SONG THAT WE WENT TO COMMUNION FOR POPPIE'S FURNAL. TIF SAID WOW, ON FATHER'S DAY. IT WAS LIKE WHEN THAT SONG STARTED TO PLAY I KNEW WHY I WAS THINKING OF HIM SO MUCH THIS MORNING. IT WAS REALLY WIERD!!! I SHEADED A FEW TEARS AND WIPED THEM AWAY AND THEN I HAD A RELAXED FEELING. I JUST KNEW DAD WAS WITH ME! AND I SAID A SPECIAL PRAY FOR HIM AT THAT TIME!

  3. ronnie, i don't know how I had heard of that story about the honey buy it isn't the first time i have heard it. so, so funny!!!!

Oh, and the church story of today, well that is just one of God's ways, I believe, that he lets us know our loved ones are still here. It happens to me all the time in one form or another, so many don't believe in miracles but it's because they don't look for them.

  6. Well, life is truly a circle...

How lucky am I to be the one that ends up in our childhood home and neighborhood (Very lucky)!!

How lucky am I to be the one that ends up with Aunt Fredia's house, the PHI house and the Restauraunt (Very lucky)!! However, I am still saddened that the Restaurant could not be saved, but that is just another story..

How lucky am I to be the one that ends up with Joseph's clothing store and Boogie's building (Very lucky)!!

Now, tell me...just how lucky am I to be the one to end up with Mr. Randolph and Ms. Cecilia's house..(yep, you guessed it...Very lucky)!!

And lastly, tell me...how lucky am I to be the one to end up with the property of Mom's childhood stomping ground (the old hotel)(Very lucky)!!!

Life surely has been a circle for me and I am Very Lucky!!! "I love the town of Golden Meadow and my roots are so deeply planted that I still live in the same house that I was born and raised", is what I tell people. I so loved my neighborhood and didn't think an outsider could do justice to all of these memories that we continue to share so my dear Hubby and I just bought the whole block!!!

    How lucky am I???

    Have a great day everyone!!
    All my love,
    Your sista,
    C

  9. Nannie, A Block Party would be fun, but since I have no neighbors in my block, I'd be partying all by myself!!!

  10. NO C YOU ARE LOOKING AT IT WRONG! YOU OWN THE BLOCK SO YOU CAN INVITE ANYONE YOU WANT TO YOUR "BLOCK PARTY". THE ADMISSION TO THE PARTY IS A COVERED DISH! SOUNDS GOOD TO ME!!!!!!
JUST MAKE SURE IT'S AFTER SUMMER BECAUSE IT'S JUST TOO HOT NOW.

  12. Mr. R.C. was a very special person indeed. So was his wife, daughter and both sons. I was closest to Randy. Probably because of how close we were in age. But I do remember many a time when the neighborhood boys would go to the levy and play flashlight. Randy usually was with us.

Randolph gave me two of my first three jobs when I was very young. One job was for me to fill up all the coolers with proper soft drinks. I had to empty the cold ones out, put hot ones on the bottom, and then put the cold ones I had removed back on the top. For this I received fifty cents six days a week. Three bucks a week was big money for me at those times.

The other job I had was only once a week. He gave me three dollars for this job but it was a nasty job. Every Saturday morning I would go to the restaurant and clean out the grease trap which is where all the funky stuff went to. It was like cleaning out a cesspool. I had to fill up buckets of this S _ _ T and carry it across the street and dump it into the bayou. It would take me about 15 to 20 trips to the bayou then I had to wash the pit out that I had just emptied. You would probably get shoot if you attempted to dump that short of thing in the bayou today.

Those three dollars plus the three for doing the soft drink coolers made me a rich man in the day for my age.

But more importantly what I remember is that Mr. R.C. never got angry with me. And believe me he would get angry at a lot of different people. He was always very kind to me and always told Daddy how good of a worker I was. Which put me in good with “The Old Man.” Know what I mean ??

    Well, that’s it for now.
    L-U-A,
    Peter

  13. YEA, I HAVE AN IDEA BUT IT WOULD COST A LITTLE BIT OF MONEY. THE FRONT WOULD BE A PARKING LOT FOR "CELENA'S" BUT TO THE BACK YOU COULD PUT SOME CAMPER STALLS. I BET YOU COULD RENT OUT THAT WITH NO PROBLEM. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

DON'T THINK I'LL BE ABLE TO GO NEXT MONDAY TO BINGO AGAIN. HAVE AN EYE DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT AT KELLEUM EYE CENTER IN HOUMA. HAVE BEEN HAVING TROUBLE WITH MY EYES AND HAVE BEEN GOING THRU A KIND OF THERPHY. THREE, NOW DOWN TO TWO, EYEDROPS. ON MONDAY I WILL HAVE MY EYES DYLATED (SPELL CHECK BUT I KNOW YOU'LL KNOW WHAT I MEAN).
SINCE TEDI WILL BE WITH ANNETTE FOR ABOUT 10 DAYS I AM GOING TO ASK HER TO COME WITH ME BECAUSE I DON'T THINK I'LL BE ABLE TO DRIVE. SHE WILL BE LOOKING BEHIND MY EYES TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS OK.

  16. hey what is wrong with your eyes?
this is the first I hear of it!!!!
hope it isn't bleeds like Simone....

  17. I DON'T THINK SO BUT THAT IS WHY SHE WANTS TO DYLATE BOTH EYES ON MONDAY. SHE DID DIAGNOSES ME WITH PUNCTATE KERATITIS AND ANTERIOR CORNEAL DYSTROPHIES (DON'T NEED SPELL CHECK I'M TYPING THIS RIGHT OFF DR. MITCHELL'S SHEET). FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND THIS IS DRY EYES. WHEN THE THERE IS A THIN FILM OVER THE CORNEAL AND WHEN IT GETS TO DRY IT STICKS TO THE CORNEAL AND THEN WHEN I GETS MOIST AGAIN IT STARTS TO PEEL OFF THE CORNEAL. THAT IS WHERE MY PAIN IS COMING FROM. I DON'T THINK SHE'LL FIND ANYTHING ELSE ON MONDAY.

AND BY THE WAY, TOMORROW I'M GOING BRING MONE TO SEE AN ORTHORPEDIC (SPELL CHECK) IN THIBODAUX FOR HER KNEES. CAMILLE TOLD MONE IT WAS TIME TO LOOK INTO REPLACING THEM. BUT THAT IT WOULD BE UP TO THE DOCTOR WHETHER SHE CAN GO THRU THAT OR NOT.
